Miljöpartiet välkomnar de nya studenterna

Vid dagens välkomstceremoni för Uppsalas recentiorer (nya studenter) höll kommunalrådet Maria Gardfjell ett särskilt tal för de internationella studenterna. Läs talet här!
Welcome here, welcome home!

Or: välkommen hit, välkommen hem!

That is the slogan of Uppsala, and we are very proud of it. Welcome home. Home. Perhaps you are only staying here for a few months. Perhaps for a year. Or perhaps you will stay here for the rest of your life. But whatever is the case, we want you to feel at home. And tell you what: most people do.

It is hard not to fall in love with Uppsala, and absolutely so if you are a student! Did you know that we just got an award for the best student city in Sweden? I believe that one of the reasons for this is that not only do the students love the city, but that the city also loves the students. As the deputy mayor, I can tell you that Uppsala depends on you. This week every year, new life flows into the city. It has been this way for hundreds of years and it has made Uppsala into what it is today.

Therefore, I want to give something back to you. We are working hard to make Uppsala an even better city. To make it easier and faster to bike, to make sure that each and every one of you gets a home with a roof and a bed, and to create more welcoming and beautiful spaces for you to hang out in. This is about building Uppsala in a sustainable way. Like all municipalities, regions and countries of the world, Uppsala has a responsibility to quickly become serious about reducing our climate emissions. The city is growing fast so it is a challenging task, but a task that I have gladly taken on.

So on behalf of the entire city of Uppsala, allow me to say: welcome home!
